چکیده

Conquest of new frontiers in the universe requires colonization old ones. This article interrogates technoscience desires to explore outer space, and how time territory for discovering extraterrestrials habitable planets are organized through settler colonialism on our own. Examining modern astronomy at Mauna Kea, I argue technoscientific promise Thirty Meter Telescope hinges a temporality lateness—late show up late time—that contributes dehumanization, elimination, dispossession Kanaka Maoli, Indigenous people Hawai‘i. demonstrate further that kia‘i—mountain protectors—unsettle conquest by cruising Kea as an alternative tempo disrupts pace building observatory.

Nature and cause of compositional variation among the alkalic cap lavas of Mauna Kea Volcano, Hawaii

Most Hawaiian basaltic shield volcanoes are capped by moderately to strongly evolved alkalic lavas (MgO < 4.5 wt. %). On M auna Kea Volcano the cap is dominantly composed of hawaiite with minor mugearite. Although these lavas contain dunite and gabbroic xenoliths, they are nearly aphyric with rare olivine and plagioclase phenocrysts and xenocrysts. The hawaiites are nearly homogeneous in radiog...

Petrogenesis of high-CaO lavas from Mauna Kea, Hawaii: Constraints from trace element abundances

The role of a mafic component in the petrogenesis of Oceanic Island Basalts (OIBs) is highly debated. As the best studied OIB, Hawaiian lavas provide critical insights into OIB genesis. At a given MgO content, the CaO content in the melt has been used to distinguish between partial melts of peridotite and garnet pyroxenite/eclogite. However, calculations using the BATCH program show that CaO co...

Hydrothermal Origin of the Clays from the Upper Slopes of Mauna Kea, Hawaii

-The soils of the summit region of Mauna Kea are similar to the soils of the high mountain deserts and to the soils of cold deserts. Dramatic differences, however, exist between the soils of the summit and other neighboring cones and the soils of the glaciated terrain. The soils of some of the cones of the summit area are clay rich and contain phyllosilicate minerals; the soils of the glaciated...

Measurements of the wavelength dependence and other properties of stellar scintillation at Mauna Kea, Hawaii.

The variance of intensity of stellar scintillation has been measured as a function of wavelength using photon counting and on-line digital analysis techniques. The experimental data are consistent with that predicted by the theory of Tatarski. Measurements of the temporal correlation function of intensity and the higher moments of the probability density function of scintillation are also descr...

Evidence of feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukemia virus, and Toxoplasma gondii in feral cats on Mauna Kea, Hawaii.

We determined prevalence to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) antibodies, feline leukemia virus (FeLV) antigen, and Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in feral cats (Felis catus) on Mauna Kea Hawaii from April 2002 to May 2004. Six of 68 (8.8%) and 11 of 68 (16.2%) cats were antibody positive to FIV and antigen positive for FeLV, respectively; 25 of 67 (37.3%) cats were seropositive to T. gondii. A...
